Default Cold weather and boating......

Just don't mix for me. And it looks like the cold weather is just around the corner. It is suppose to be in the lower 40's later today which isn't to bad but usually means the cold stuff isn't to far behind. It's just not that enjoyable to go boating when the wind feels like it will cut you in two.

I'm not to crazy about going out on the boat when it is real cold out. The wind does feel like it can cut you in two! Now when you stop for a while in the sun and out of the wind it can be really nice. But then you start all over again when you move.

Well we will camp in the cold weather, if it isn't down in the 30's that is, but riding in a boat with all that cold air blowing on you can't be to much fun. So, not something I would like to do in the winter time. At least you can get up close to a warm fire while camping.

I'm looking around for a wetsuit to wear when the weather (and water) are getting cooler. I think I have a line on some used rental ones from a whitewater rafting company. Wetsuits are really good at cutting the wind, too.

I don't like it out on the lake when the cold comes out to play. I would rather fish from the shore during the winter months. I know you don't get many near the shore during the really cold months, but I fish up until the middle of November without trouble.

Some of the better lake fishing in our area is at this time of year. My boat has a canvas enclosure that can be set up. They also sell small heaters designed for boats so it's possible to make it toasty.

Joe S,

I'm with you. No one wants to be out in an exposed boat in wintry weather. With canvas it is reasonable to fish all winter. I try to pick days with little wind and some sun. The sun comes through the plastic windows on the side curtains and heats up the inside. I will out after Thanksgiving with some out of town guests in search of the infamous Lahontan cutthroat trout at Pyramid Lake, NV. The lake record is 41 pounds.

I never mind being bundled up and still enjoying the lake. It depends how cold it is for me, I never mind going out on the lake. I am okay with the cold but when the winds pick up its time for me to go in.
