Default Anyone Else Claustrophobic?

I have to confess, I am terribly claustrophobic. If I have a surface, such as rock, touching me from the front or back or from side to side I have a panic attack. I have always joked that is why I love hiking so much. I don't mind touching soft surfaces such as blankets but I cannot sleep in a sleeping bag either. It doesn't make sense because I have never been caught in anything but it is there nonetheless. Is anyone else claustrophobic?

I am slightly claustrophobic, so it's rather odd that I like exploring caves. I stick to tourist ones though, because I can't imagine going through a cave I don't know and inching my way through really tight spots in the hopes of finding a bigger one.

I hate feeling pinned down. It took a lot of cold nights before I could make myself zip up my first mummy sleeping bag. I still leave the zipper down a few inches so I can get my arms out in an emergency.

The thought of being mauled by a bear worries me much less than being caught in my mummy bag in a flash flood or an animal attack.

I'm very mildly claustrophobic, which I never realized untils I was helping map out cave passages a LONG time ago.

I was squeezing my way into a passage that started out big enough to wiggle through but narrowed until I couldn't squeeze any further. At that point I tried to push back out, but found I was stuck.

I drummed my feet on the ground, and my safety person grabbed my ankles and pulled me out. I was stuck so tightly that my sweatshirt and t-shirt got pulled over my head as I slid out.

That moment that I found I couldn't back out, I almost gave into total panic.

Since then I always have that little panicky voice in the back of my head whispering to me when I need to go into a confined space.

Oddly enough, it doesn't really bother me to crawl through a maze in full bunker gear and airpack with a totally blacked out mask. I suppose that it's because I know it's training.

Hi...

A guide acquaintance of mine related the experience he once had when he was 'camped out' (sleeping bag only) on a sand bar one night.

That night he was awakened by a grizzly trying to take him away, presumably for a meal. Fortunately, his .44 was in his sleeping bag and the result was guide 1...grizzly 0...!!

Hi...

I don't think that I'm claustrophobic, but I wouldn't even think about crawling into those tiny openings like I did when I was spelunking as a teenager...!!

Like I said- it was a LONG (almost 40 years) time ago...I was 19-20 that year, and I got into going caving with the VaTech Cave Club. That passage mapping trip took a lot of the enthusiasm out of me.

Still gives me a bit of a chill thinking about getting stuck there...

I have the Daniel Boone claustrophobia. If I can see you, you're too close.
