Most of our hikes take place within a few hours of our home. It makes it easy for us to go out in the morning and come home that night. And familiarity does help for times when we are crunched for time.

Proximity to home is a factor on most occasions. For long weekends we may go to a state park that is located further away. We also enjoy visiting national parks while on vacation and trying out the trails there. My wife and I often explore less known trails when trekking without the kids.

I have a good choice of sites near my town but when I'm out of ideas I tend to open a map and pick a place or take on the advice from an experienced trekker.

I like to go places that are not near my home. There were a few times where I went to another country to hike a famous mountain in that region. I normally hike the local mountains that we have nearby but I really like to hike in another place other than what is near us.
