We have the rare Rattlesnake at times but Copperheads and Cotton Mouths are much much more common. We also have the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow as well. We do the best we can to keep our situational awareness knob turned up on high and try to elimenate the things that are conducive to keeping them around and providing them optimal habitat. As such they rarely present a big problem. Theyre out there, just got to keep a sharp eye out and be smart about how you conduct yourself.

I saw a very large Black Rat Snake here in Iowa, at Pikes Peak State Park. It was at least 7 feet long and it crossed the trail in front of me. Sometimes they grow to 9 feet.

We have some extremely poisonous snakes here in eastern North Carolina. Knowledge is the key to keep from killing every snake you see. Even our children can identify a black snake or a King snake and not be afraid. We are ever on the watch for the others.
