I started water skiing in the late 50s and had a great Ski Centurion in the 1990s before turning into a wake boarder. I haven't been behind a boat in awhile, but I can tell you that the people that know barefoot skiing start with a boom next to the transom of the tow boat. You need to be a competent slalom ski before trying it. It takes a lot of speed to account for the reduced ski area. Slalom skiers like around 33 mph. Barefoot you need more like 40 mph. The balance is delicate, and the chance of injury is higher because of the speed.
