Part of our family just got back from a trip to the Outer Banks. While they were exploring, they got out and pulled the boat up on the beach. Sure enough, while they were wandering, their boat started drifting out into the Sound. Luckily, they were able to swim out and get it. Otherwise, it might have been a night on the beach until someone realized they were missing.

Just curious...did any of you carry and emergency gear on your person...or in the boat?

We are continually on the kids about safety, especially boat safety. They hear it from the time they are two years old. This day, some of the teens and 20-year-olds took the boat right across the Sound from the island house where we all stay. It's a quick, safe trip usually. They take repellant, hats, water and sunscreen always. I don't think they had a cell phone with them because the boat has a radio. They could have been stranded, however, for an afternoon. I think the lesson was learned.
