Default Swimming In Ponds

I was talking to a cousin of mine the other day and we were out on the deck of her house out back. She has a pond which is pretty deep-16-18 feet in places. It's pretty big and isn't used by cattle or livestock of any kind. I mentioned I'd love to go swimming there. There was the usual haze on the edges of the pond, at least one that doesn't circulate. She was surprised that I would even entertain the thought that I would swim in water that is so obviously "dirty". I laughed at her and told her she'd gotten "citified" and didn't remember when we were kids. We used to swim in ponds all of the time when we were little. So who else is willing to swim in less than pristine chlorinated water? Raise your hands now and identify yourselves!

Me! I learned to swim in a fairly small man-made lake. I still like to swm in a lazy river or a pond/lake.

The big thing to be careful of in a river with any current to speak of is to watch out for a rogue current that might take you into a fallen tree or under a rock.

Ponds? No, cricks - Yes. I'm not a pond swimmer because I can't see the bottom. I don't mind Oceans or cricks but I don't like ponds. I don't think I've ever swam in a pond and I don't think I will. I'm not citified either - I just don't know what is lurking in the dirty water.

We swam in reservoirs and lakes all summer. Cricks as well. I've become paranoid about jumping in to cold water in my old age, due to locking up once a few years back. Those alpine lakes are COLD and the shock can really tighten you up so you can't breathe.
