Default 12-day canoe trip down yukon's snake river

Hi...

Today's (Saturday) New York Times has an interesting article (wish I could post the article, but I can't) about four canoers who recently took a 12-day trip down Yukon's Snake River.

Not only was it an interesting and eventful trip, but some of the mistakes they made can give us information to help us not duplicate them.

PS...it is under the Travel section.

Thanks, I'll have to check it out. We are looking at a possible Gates of the Arctic backpack/canoe trip next year and I'll need all the advice I can get.

Hi...

I think you could easily pick it up at the N.Y. Time's website.

Hope somebody can find a link. (that's beyond my expertise, darn it.)

Sounds like a cool trip.

I never met a dog I didn't like. You may not like GUNS, and choose not to own one. You may not like GOD, and choose to exclude him. However, if some one breaks into your home the first two things you will do are, 1) Call someone with a GUN. and 2) PRAY they get there in time.

The rivers of the North have always fascinated me, but the cost of transportation has been the one major obstacle. The people in the article were over-matched. They were learning how to paddle by the end. Glad no one was hurt.

I take exception to the author's assertion that in the lower 48 you can only get 22 miles from a road. I have been more than 50 miles from the nearest dirt road in the Teton Wilderness of Wyo.

Yes Ppine, Two ocean plateau in the Teton would be at least 50 miles as would the head of Thoroughfare Creek. I believe Montana has the lower 48 record distance from a road. There is a spot in the Bob Marshall that is 110 miles from a road, (or so they say ) Whereas Idaho can only get about 90 miles from a road in the Selway-Bitterroot and 80 in the Frank Church. (too many old mining access roads to get further)
