Default Backpack on a bike

My friend Jamie and his gal are nuts, they have decided they are going to backpack camp. Whatever fits on the bike without her falling off is going with them. I am guessing just a bag, a few odds & ends. I pack light but not that light!

I've seen bikers come through town before that were backpacking. They had very little with them and what they didn't carry, they bought when they traveled through towns. One guy who was doing this, came into a small medical clinic my wife works at because he ate a poisonous mushroom and had to be hospitalized. My wife said they parked his bike and gear in the clinic's break room until he came out of the hospital. The doc from the clinic brought him back to the clinic from the hospital in the next town and he went on his way.

That would be great, I suppose. But they should have a lot of energy or at least carry with them as much energy food as they can. I think biking requires more energy in the long run than hiking.

I agree on the energy part. I've never done any long rides but a couple of co-workers did those horrendous long races and it was amazing how much fluid they go through and still lose weight. Hmmmm maybe I ought to start taking long rides

I think it is a pretty cool idea. Of course I do not think I would be able to pack for a trip like that very well. I would end up having to eat roots and berries along the way and sleeping under bridges.

I believe that it would be a blast. A bicycle can be set up to carry as much or more gear than one would carry in a backpack. In fact all lot of people that do rid across county us backpacking tents, stoves and other gear.

Here is some info on gear and things you might find interesting. To me the only thing that would be worse than backpacking would be the expense of getting starting. Good bikes are not cheap.

Bicycle touring panniers and waterproof bike tour bags. The place to buy handlebar bags with map case, front and rear panniers and saddle bags with watertight roller closure.

I know some people who spent a few weeks doing a cross country circus tour. They packed on camping things AND the stuff they needed to perform. It was sort of ridiculous how much gear they managed to pack onto their bikes.
