Yeah, a hood over the top of the nylon bag will probably protect it from rains. Then you don't have to worry about your foods being all messed up by condensation. I've made the mistake of putting something like a used sock into a dry bag only to find that everything else in it smells/tastes like a dirty foot the next day.

+1 on the river swim, Grandpa...that's one reason I carry that bag. I absolutely HATE wet gear. Plus, if you do i right, it makes a dandy flotation device. Ever cross a small running body of water and step in a hole? Remember how pleasant that was?
