I completely agree with you, hummingbird. We were really lucky that we weren't home when Sandy hit. But after that, my wife and I have gotten talking about installing one in our home.

Guys, any suggestions which? ones should I look at for a good (but affordable) woodburner for our home?

Not much help here. I have a "Papa Fisher" but it is 30 years old. I'm sure they have more efficient models now. However mine works great for our altitude and winter conditions. Just make sure it is air tight so you can control the draft.

We also heat our home with a wood furnace. We actually have different wood for our stove versus campfire. On our property right now we have approximately 50 face cords of wood. We cut, split and stack our own.

A wood fire just makes a house cozier than a furnace. I can set the thermostat for the gas furnace to 78* and still feel chilled. With the fire burning, I'm comfy at 70. I also kind of like the morning ritual of starting the fire, and tending it through the day. However, my husband did not have any nostalgic fuzzy feeling about splitting wood all winter. He rents a hydraulic splitter for a day each fall and gets it all done at once. We usually burn wood from early november through the end of march, and rely on the furnace for the "shoulder seasons."

My woodshed is full. Now I'm helping my little brother fill his. Just about done so we can do some serious hunting.

Same here, hummingbird. Unfortunately, the owner of our apartment won't have it. Would have been nice though.
