I've been there twice and I loved it. Motels are quite cheap with pools. Down town San An is easily accessible and you'd walk right by the Alamo without even seeing it. If you go there please check out the river walk.

You may want to check out this article on camping itineraries around Texas Hill Country. There are lots of suggested areas that you can visit and also a few campgrounds that you can try while you're in San Antonio.

Hope it helps.
