Default Camping Near Washington, DC

Hello all,

I'm trying to plan a 4 day camping trip at an area close to DC - within a 2-3 hour drive (thinking VA, WVA, or Western MD). I don't want a "camp ground" where I just park and am 50 feet away from a trailer or any other groups of campers. Does anybody have any good suggestions?

I would prefer something in the mountains and would love somewhere that I can do some decent hiking and fishing.

I'll be taking a dog (leashed of course) so the park/site needs to be friendly to that.

I looked into Shenandoah park backcountry camping but they do not permit campfires... I would prefer a place where I can keep a little warmer at night.

Apologies if this has been asked before - I tried searching with no luck.

I know that's a pretty choosy list for a beggar - thanks in advance for any tips!

Both Shenandoah & Westmoreland come to mind but I have never been to Shenandoah, only taking the word of my brother in law on that one. How far are you willing to travel and what parts will you be heading in from?

Thank you both for the quick replies. I think Dolly Sods is exactly what I'm looking for. Do you have any suggestions as to the best place to park and begin hiking in? I'm driving from Washington DC.

Thanks again.

Rob

Please disregard last question - did some digging around the internet and found a decent way in. Will report back after the weekend with results.

Thanks again for the help!
