With wife and kids mostly, we invite friends sometimes but not often.

Default solo

I've done solo trips and enjoyed them to a point. I like that I'm on my time and don't have to worry about others who are too fast, or too slow. I enjoy being alone with my thoughts and if I want to make on the trail changes to my my goals I can, without debate.

But one of my favorite things in life is to sit by a camp fire with at least one other person to chat with and suck down a few beers and cigars. When I'm solo and enjoying the campfire I sometimes wish I had someone else to share the experience with.

I usually camp alone, unless I'm with someone.

I like both. If I am backpacking and covering a lot of distance I tend to like being solo more. I wake up earlier than most so I like to get hiking before dawn. Though the evenings with others is fun. On other trips I like to have company. This is especially true in winter when the sun sets at dinner time and there is only so much campfire tv one can watch alone.

I think camping and hiking alone is dangerous. My brother-in-law takes a ferry to a deserted island several times a year. He will camp and hike there by himself for about a week.

I worry because in order to catch the ferry back, he must hike across the entire island. The ferry only comes once a week. This means that if he is injured and is unable to reach the ferry, he is stuck on the island for another week.

There is only one spot on the whole island that phone service is available. He has a device now that allows him to tell us he is ok, which does make me feel somewhat better.

Penelope,
I would like to meet your brother-in-law. We used to spend a week on an island in Chesapeake Bay when we were 12-14 years old. There was no ferry.
