For whatever reason, I've had compasses hang up and not spin properly. So at a glance you think you are heading one way and in turn you are heading another. I've only had this happen a handful of times. Mostly in the military. Even though the compasses we used are really good, they take a real beating sometimes and I think that's why they screw up. A good reason not to purchase a cheap compass to save a buck.
