Default The fiddleheads are out!

I know what I'm doing this weekend: going on a fiddlehead harvest.

I spied some up-and-coming fronds while out this past weekend, and it tells me it's time to head into the boonies for a few hours and harvest some of the tasty treats.

Does anyone else have a taste for such things?

I had to google that one
Fiddleheads - Wild Harvest Gourmet - Recipes
that would be cool, I like doing things like that. Picking of anything around here ticks off the park rangers.

Same here. Too much snow. But yes, fiddleheads are very delicious and I intend on picking them when they pop in the spring.

Um, look at my site ID.... where are the fiddleheads?

In southern BC, where it's been in the low 50's and is green, at the moment. I can drive to the snow zone inside of an hour, but the fiddleheads are coming out at the lower elevations: YUMMERS!!!!!

I've never tried them. What do they taste like? I love to eat greens that are harvested in the wild though. They're usually so much better than the things we grow from seed. I usually go on a green hunt whenever I can and then freeze some that have been cooked for later on.

You can actually buy the things in grocery stores locally.

They have to be quite young and tender, or the 'hairs' on them can cause gut-troubles. They taste sort of like a combination of asparagus and celery, and are wicked if quickly run thru a frying pan with a little garlic butter.

However, I'm the weirdo that grows nasturtiums just so I can put the flowers in a salad bowl and eat them.

I like fiddle heads too, they grow wild here as well but they are not out till between April and may here, we have far too much snow for them to be around any earlier.

We went for a walk in the woods yesterday looking to see if any might be out here. We had a hard time even finding the ground. Still 2-3' of snow in most places. We can walk on top of the ice crust for the most part.
