Default Fire when it's raining

Last time we went camping it poured several times! How can we keep the fire going when it's raining? We left the starter wood out last time and then we had to burn paper plates to start the fire.
Any tips?

This is pretty common in my area, we deal with rain for the better part or 8 months a year. What works for me is finding a punky or rotten stump or log and putting it on top of the fire. This will keep some of the rain off the dry wood, but also as the punk dries out, it forms coals and helps to keep the fire lit... or at least makes it easier to re-light if needed.

We carry an extra 6x8 tarp too to keep the dry stuff covered.

I bring charcoal in a bag and keep it in a dry place. It burns hot to help dry out the wet wood placed on the fire. But I try to keep the fire wood dry as we never know when it will rain.

Always bring some type of cover for the fire. Whether it's wood cover, metal, or a tarp. You never know when you might need it.

I love the punky stump idea, thanks for sharing that one. I was wondering the same thing, you wouldn't believe how many fires that have been put out by fires here. Man I wish the contestants on Survivor wish they could take stumps with them.
