Default Gift ideas

I am looking for ideas for a Christmas gift for my nephew and niece. They are 10 & 8 and they are starting to really love the outdoors. They both like to go camping and hike too. What types of things can I buy for them? I want separate gifts for both and they have to have something to do with the outdoors.

Thanks in advance!

How about getting them both a sleeping bag set, or those camping chairs to use by the campfire. There are endless ideas of outdoor gifts. You could get them a pop-up tent together and then individually the sleeping bags (character ones or not). How much money do you usually spend on them?

You could try getting them hiking packs or sleeping bags like was said earlier. Maybe some nature viewing gear like a bird identification book or binoculars.

Obviously this depends a lot on the kid, but a Swiss Army knife might be good. This assumes of course both that they're mature enough at that age to deal with a knife and that their parents are okay with it. Man, but I wish that I'd had the one I have now when I was ten.

Here's a link to the exact one I've got, on sale:

Swiss Army Economy Huntsman Knife - '09 Overstock at REI-OUTLET.com

Guides to local flora and fauna would also probably go down well. Many hours of fun are to be hand wandering around and identifying local plants and animals.

Hiking packs might also go down pretty well. Depending on your budget, you might even stock them up with some basic supplies (first aid, water bottle, etc). There's something great about a gift with more gifts inside it.

As mentioned above, binoculars would be a great idea. I remember that I LOVED binoculars when I was that age. They were just the coolest things in the world. You could also go with a monocular for increased portability without losing any of the cool-factor.

Kids' gear of course. Backpacks, show shoes, warm clothing, kids' accessories. The last time I bought a gift as a present to my 9 year-old niece is a hat and neck warmer.
