There's a great book entitled "How to **** in the Woods".

And if you don't want to pack a heavy shovel, then use your handy, wood walking stick to help dig that hole.

Or you can buy a light weight shovel. Since we're not talking about digging the foundation of a house here, you can use something the size of a garden trowel. I've got a folding one that weighs all of 4 oz. It's amazingly sturdy for something so small and light.

Bruen said dig a hole, do your thing and cover it up.

Right, Bruen. I carry a collapsible shovel and some toilet paper. And , Tammydz, animals make other animals sick with their waste.

The simple fact is that you can't find a square inch of ground anywhere on the planet that hasn't been crapped on. That rich loamy soil that grows things so well didn't get that way from broken up igneous rock.

So true that there isn't much land that hasn't had natural fertilizer added to it. I also use a trowel dig a hole and do my thing. I am not packing it out unless I am in a area that has very heavy traffic. I can see the need them as app the waste would build up faster than it can break down. However if I am in the back county that sees little traffic until the bears and the deers or whatever stop taking a dump in the woods neither am I.

there is a new approach now days. Poo and do not dig... just poo on the ground and sprinkle some easily found top soil, debris, leaves etc..., on top. This will allow Air and natural microbes to decay the waste much faster than burying and smothering air to facilitate the decay....no kidding....National Forest along the AT has several such potty privies set up to do just this,.... as this is the most effective way to decompose quickly...now I am not saying take a pooh on a trail of at a designated camp site next to possible tent sites...I am saying use common sense and do it the way you want to but please be sure and wash your hands. (practice good Hygiene)

There are many privies along at AT that promotes this...I am serious....this is the best way to decompose quickly and be environmentally sound....now iffin you are among hundreds of campers all enjoying your usual camp setting, then you need a Human controlled privy that will be maintained and serviced. In the real Bush like I am always in..I never worry about a hole to pooh in and know decay is a couple days away....unlike several weeks when you bury...

digging a hole is OLD SCHOOL unless you are among many backpackers on a camp out or trail....I for one avoid those camp outs and trails...
