First time I've heard of that. Pretty curious now to give it a try. Of course, it'll have to wait until I head over camping with my guy friends. I doubt my girlfriend would share my intrigue and curiosity on this one. Hahahaha!!!!

ej,

I have had plenty of outdoorsy women help me circle the camp and mark their scent. I have had some career outdoors women like firefighters and NOLS instructors squat and pee while I was having a conversation with them. It is no big deal. There is a definite difference between people that play outdoors, and those that work outdoors.

Marking doesn't always repel the wild animals. Chicago Basin in the Weminuche; go to the fringe to mark the area and the goats would butt you out of the way before you were done to get to the salt in the urine. We were warned about keeping our packs hung or the goats would eat the back padding and straps for the salt.

I actually saw one of those survival guys on the discovery channel talking about this as he walked around his capmsite peeing. So there must be some truth in it. Alls I know us beer drinking cajuns have nooo trouble marking our camp sites.

I have never heard of this but I wouldn't image it would do much for bears. Their sense of smell is way off the charts. They can smell where food used to be (yes, used to be). They can already smell us so peeing on a tree wouldn't really matter.

What it will do is attract any critters who are needing salt - assuming their need for salt is greater than their fear of humans. I have actually seen deer . . . . consume . . . . salt this way.

My girlfriend is still fairly new to the whole outdoorsy thing. She still gets a bit of a...shall we say, culture shock...whenever we go out camping. Of course, really hoping that in time she would turn out to be like one of those outdoorsy women that you've mentioned.

Pastywhite,

Because bears have such a great sense of smell I think the scent of humans is a powerful deterrent as long as the camp is clear of food or cosmetic smells. You are probably right that **** won't deter them in a camp full of food.

Thanks Jolly Roger -seems like your story is the "proof in the pudding" that marking your territory is more than just a myth.

I always mark my territory but it's purely coincidental with getting rid of the beer I've been drinking.
