Default Musical instruments in a camping trip...

I went camping last weekend with my girlfriend and a few of her university colleagues. I was quite surprised to see some of them brought along small musical instruments, like harmonicas, a bamboo flutes and a little ukulele... They used it to sing during lay-overs and around the camp fire.

Have you ever taken a musical instrument in a camping trip? And if you do what do you take with you?

I haven't but one time high in the Wind Rivers, with (we thought) no one around for miles, the soft tones of an Indian flute started up. I Wasn't sure if the "old ones" were haunting us or what. But next day we found out another group had came in behind us and set up camp in the dark about a half mile away. The guy on the flute was very good and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

We love to take musical instruments. In the family we have guitar, banjo, violin, harmonica, and reed flute players. It is so nice to be able to sit around playing tunes or just improvising around the campfire.

We don't but it can be quite enjoyable to hear people making music in other campsites. As long as people aren't obnoxious about it, it's wonderful.

Reminds me of growing up in the Appalachian Mountains back in the early 60's where it was not too unusual for the instruments to come out around the campfire or to hear some old mountain ballads being sung. I wonder if that is still going on?

I car camp and don't hear much but an occasional guitar early in the evening these days. I still sing some of those old songs when I'm in the backwoods hopefully far from others hiking because I can't carry a tune to save my life!

When soloing (pardon the pun here) in the backcountry I sing to the bears. It makes them run the other way just as people do.

I backpack with several friends who bring instruments. One has a Backpackers Guitar that actually breaks down and weighs 1.2 lbs.

I wish we had a musical family and could bring instruments. The only musical instrument I bring is my mp3 player. I can just sit and listen to my favorite music while enjoying the outdoors.

Stringed instruments like a banjo or guitar are cool to have along. I guess a harmonica is cool, too. It's just a matter of carrying it along. Unless, of course, you are driving.

When camping I usually always bring my guitar.
