Default NoSeeUm's

Anyone have tips on reducing no see ums or midges at the camp site? I am coastal camping by a marsh and river and they were out in force last weekend when I visited a similar area but not camping.
These little guys have no regard for DEET it seems.

I have a no see ums headnet but that is far from what you are looking for. I also would very much like to hear the answer on this one.

One thing that I've found that works is to keep a smoky fire going. They seem to avoid smoke although that doesn't make it too pleasant for you either. Other than that if you can locate yourself on a site where there's air movement, that seems to help keep them away as well.

I don't know about SSS. Maybe it works. I do know that biting midges can cause blue tongue in horses so we dust our horses when there is an infestation inland of the Great Lakes.

I aint sure we even talking 'bout da same critter. What we call no seeums down here on the gulf coast is a tiny gnat that swarms very thick and itch-burns when they blanket your arms so bad it can make your eyes water. I have a theory that they key on carbon cause they are always much worse around petro fumes.(the crude oil in my barge) They cant folloow ya good but when you are standing still they are awful. Not sure da wife would stand still to be dusted so ya do what ya gotta do. SSS works some but even it wont protect if ya still not moving or neer a sourse of fumes.
