Default Stinky Dirty Hippie.

You know I don't mind being stinky when I'm on a trail but I tend to feel a bit uncomfortable when I make my way into town for supplies or when the trail merges with a road. I do most of my backpacking in the east so it's common to just have to hike through a town. I feel like I'm in Junior High, but I really do feel unwelcome sometimes.

People can either live with it or not, if you are stinky take some wet naps with you before you head into town. If it really bothers you, get your supplies before you head out.

Grab a hotel room on the cheap and get a shower before you go out into public.
We do this while elk hunting in Colorado before we head home to Texas.

All good ideas above. A washcloth and some soap in a restroom can make you feel much better, too. It doesn't really bother me though, as I can't smell.

Most towns near major trails get a fair amount of smelly foot traffic. They're used to it. I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'm not quite what you'd call a hippy though. Long hair is (IMHO) a real pain to take care of, on the trail and off. I don't even own a comb.
