Default Taking Photos Every 5 Seconds?

Due to my job I need to make a picture everywhere I go but taking photos every minute or so is so annoying. And my friend is doing it. He is just relentless and it's not just a thing of the moment, he is often on the trail.

I know someone like this too. We probably all do. I prefer to take the mental pictures when I am out on the trail because no camera is ever going to do it justice.

Guilty here. I take dozens of photos while hiking and backpacking. I like that with a digitial camera I can delete all the ones that stink and usually wind up with 4 or 5 beautiful photos worthy of a coffee table book.

I plan some trips during certain times of the year mainly to take photos. I drove from Lake Tahoe to Carmel,CA a good half dozen times just trying to capture that perfect shot that hangs in my home. A photo of Mendenhall Glacier, also hanging here, was taken over my husband's shoulder with a long lens while the seaplane we were in was bouncing around like mad. It was a total surprise that it turned out nicely and is one of my favorites.

Mental pictures sometimes need to be cued to remember how all of the senses were affected.

The girlfriends an amateur photographer, but she never causes any trouble. Mostly we have to stop for 3-4 minutes in one spot when she sees something worth a picture, but that doesn't happen too often.
I noticed the people taking a pic every 5 seconds are the ones who usually don't get out too much into the great outdoors, better known as tourists.

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. And believe me I'd much rather look at a picture than listen to a thousand words of mindless drivel.

I'm sometimes guilty of frequent picture taking. I used to be much worse, especially when I was trying to learn all the ins and outs of photography. I finally gained the confidence in myself and my abilities that I started taking far fewer pictures, and I actually got really good at it.

I've noticed the phases I went through, and I think I've found a happy balance. I started off taking dozens of pictures on small trips, and it was hard to weed out the good from the bad because of the shear volume. Then, I started just focusing on the artistic, I took far fewer pictures and they were great, but I missed getting pictures of all the fun stuff on the trips. Now, I mix it up pretty well. I have my dSLR I use for most of the artsy stuff, but I also carry a point and shoot to get the in between stuff for the memories.

We took about 100 pics on our AT section hike. I thought we'd documented about everything pretty well. However. when we got back and downloaded them, I realized that there were lots more things I'd have liked to get a picture of.

My resolution for the next trip- is to take tons of pics. I can always delete them.

The other things we forgot was to take a journal to write in each evening. We sat down the evening we came off the trail and spent over an hour making notes and writing down our impressions of the trip.

I've since remedied that- I have a Rite in the Rain pad and pencil in my backpack now.

There is a danger in looking at the world thru a lense. It is good to have technology on hand, but it takes some discipline to make sure you run it and not the other way around.

I am reformed somewhat from the compulsive urge to take photos. I used to study geomorphology and got very wrapped up in photos of landforms when traveling.
