Default What is the best way to keep bugs away!

We are kind of new to camping and really like to camp out in the woods. But those dang bugs can eat you a live sometimes. Is there a trick to keeping them away at night while you are trying to sleep? We use a tent with net for the windows and door and try to keep it tightly closed. Can you use some sort of bug spray just before you go to bed and spray it around, would it last through the night?

You don't want bug spray inside the tent. If they are getting in, then fix that problem first. Outside, a thermacell works great for a 15 foot diameter area. And of course, the inevitable deet spray or rub on will keep them off you. There are other mosquito repellants as well as others will post here shortly.

keep the tent closed until you go to bed.

My tent keeps the bugs out. A fire will help too. And I like to smoke a huge cigar and become severely intoxicated so I at least won't fell them bite.

I make sure I keep the tent closed and when getting in and out do so quickly.

When outside the tent I use a DEET based repellent and like Hiker Joe, I often have a cigar going.

I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

Hi...

Many good suggestions here.

I personally won't use a repellent containing DEET...ever since I found out that DEET will dissolve paint...!! Yes, from personal experience...!!

There are, however, some others NOT containing DEEET that you might want to try. I have no info on them in front of me right now, but you might want to try to Google for that info.
