Default Winter Camping

Do any of you go camping in the dead of winter? I hear of people doing it around here, of course, but it doesn't get that cold. I occasionally hear of people camping in the snow but I think they are crazy (no offense in advance ).

We used to do it a lot when I was in Scouts. Haven't done it much lately except for hunting trips, and haven't been many of them the last few years (for a variety of reasons).

It can be a lot of fun if you're properly prepared and equipped. Bear in mind you'll want about 2-3x as much food as you'd expect.

The other thing to remember is be prepared for the worst. That may mean cutting and running if the weather looks like it's going to change, or being prepared for a longer stint if you get weathered in. Winter weather is very changeable, especially in the mountains.

Nope! We are planning on camping this year in the winter. I have already booked a cabin! Yes, I'm a wuss for winter camping. There would be no way ever I would tent camp. I hope it's fun!

It really is no big deal. As a backpacker I go out 3 seasons and summer is the one that I stay home. It is all about having the right gear. Would rather be out in 10 degrees then 85 and high humidity.

Winter camping is great. It’s a perfect season to be out and about. Here is a shot of an Antillean Blue taken earlier this year in the dead of winter on New Years Day;

Several weeks later in the very heart of winter the poppies were doing their magic;

We do as much hiking and camping in winter as we do in fall and spring.

I don't have the proper equipment at the moment but I used to do it before. It all depends on how "dead" the winter is in your area. Sometimes it is not even smart to try camping out.

Yep, this is me as well. Im down here in GA, and I hate the choking humidity in the summer. Bping really gets ramped up here in the beginning of Oct. and goes through about early June in the mtns. Winters here in the 20's and some high teens in the hills make it hiking perfection. Well, no wind makes it hiking perfection and daytime temps reaching 40's helps too!

We also booked a cabin for this coming winter. My wife's still a bit worried that our youngest may not really be up to the cold. If things go well, then we might be able to do a bit of camping in our motorhome and then finally with the tent.

I know lots of you cammping snobs don't consider cabining camping but they are a great get away for seasonal extremes. Louisiana has some beautiful cabins in the state Camp grounds. They run for like 90$ a night and many are built on the water with fishing peers. This is considered the off season so on week days they often run 2 for 1 night specials. This is an amazing bargan

Hmmmm. You have me thinking, Cappy. My husband and I usually go on a trip for our anniversary which is in the middle of winter, so I may have to book a cabin to stay in this year. It would be a lot more fun than sitting in a motel room looking out at the snow.
