Default Length of first ride

What should the length of your first horse ride be? I hear that riding can make a person pretty sore. I want to be able to sit after the ride. Is there a way to make your butt not get so sore?

I would suggest a one hour ride in an arena. Your horse will be relaxed and can't get away from you. The best situation would be to get some instruction from a person you are not related to. Horses have strong self-preservation instincts. Learn to use your legs and seat to control your horse rather than pulling on his face.

Edit- Keep your stirrups long and stand in them to take the weight off of your butt, especially at first. Don't be afraid to get off and walk to stretch your legs. Chose a smaller animal especially if you are not too big. It will be more comfortable.

You can't really get to know a horse in 2 hours. But you might be able to in a couple of long days.

Two hours at the most should be your first horse ride. That gives you enough time to get to know your horse and learn the basics of riding her. You'll get sore, but not overwhelmingly sore.

Well if you have never been on a horse before there really isn't anyway to keep from getting sore. But as mentioned, if you go slow at it and get off and on the horse a few times, that should help. Oh and I sure wouldn't spend more then an hour or two the first time.

Kinda depends on how wide the horse is and how wide your butt is.
Aches and pains are just part of it.
I have rode all my life and still am sore after some time in the saddle.
