I don't like to ride donkeys or horses. I know most people enjoy it but not me. It's not because I have some phobia I just don't feel comfortable sitting on animal's back.

I have an Army mountain operations manual from 1946. It talks about mules and shows how to build frames and loading equipment. I'd like to give it a try.

They do very well if they have been used to having someone on their backs. It's just like training a horse and honestly, they are more reliable to my mind. I have looked into buying a "walking mule" that has a special gate and is so easy to ride. I don't mind the hybrids as they've been around since time immemorial. My Dad used to plow with a mule, they were much stronger and sure footed.

They have donkey rides at this yearly Christmas carnival I go to every year. They are tied to this metal thing that spins so they just put the children on them and walk around in circles. I haven't ridden one, but my niece seemed to have a ball with it.

Donkeys are lots of fun to own and ride. Same can be said of mules and horses.
We have a pet donkey I originally bought to run with the goats for protection from preditors. "Ladybug" is a sweet thang and just loves the kids, they can ride her and play on her without a single problem.
My grandfather used to plow with mules and his brother and he would win local rodeos and playdays on a mule they owned as kids.
Donkeys are just fine to ride, I would prefer a jenny over a jack though.
