Default Best bike for a beginner adult?

There is a riding trail near where I live. The surface is made of concrete and follows the path of old train tracks.

Although my friend and I are use to biking on it, there is a woman who would like to join us when we start riding again in the spring. She has not ridden a bike since she was a kid and needs to purchase one.

Does anyone have an idea of a good bike that would be fairly inexpensive? She isn't sure she will enjoy it, so she doesn't want to get a lot of money tied up in one.

Might go with a hybrid or a mountain bike as these would be more comfortable. I would look used rather than a Walmart or Department store bike. Might spend a few more buck but will get a better bike. Look on Craigs List.

Default Yard sales

You can get some really good bikes at yard sales in our neighborhood. Kids outgrow them or want a new one. Teens no longer use them after they get their cars. Adults tire of them after awhile and want the space. Check out a used one first.

Thanks for the ideas! I hadn't thought about Craigslist since she has been talking about buying a new bike, but I will suggest it to her.

I'd suggest a mountain bike because of the larger tires and the more cushioned ride, in case she wants to ride anywhere else. Tell her to be sure to get a bike that's the right size, otherwise she may end up being unbalanced and wobbly on it.
