Default Horseback riding lessons

I would love to get my daughter into horseback riding lessons. Is there a certain age to wait until I get her signed up? Or is it better to start them younger?
Does anyone here ride horses?

I ride but I never had lessons. We were just put on top of the horse and led around for a while. If we didn't fall off, the old fat mare we rode was given her head to walk around the pasture with us on her back. She would watch us like a mother. Eventually Mom or Dad would walk over and get us off. Then a few days later we did it again. If we fell off she stopped immediately and checked us out before Mom or Dad got to us. We never got hurt though because we were in the soft pasture. When we got good at sitting on her when she was walking around we gradually advanced with Mom or Dad riding another horse at our side. But I swear that old mare would have spanked us herself if we did anything foolish. If we tried to start running her she would just stop and look back at us. LOL

I learned how to ride growing up as well. I didn't have lessons ever. We just did it on our ranch. My situation was very much like Gopher's. We had an old horse who took us around and watched over us like a mother hen.
