Default Basic Fishing Kit?

Let's say you don't have a fishing pole. What are the basic pieces of equipment that you would use for fishing, considering that you can make a pole out of a stick?

Hmmm...50 feet of so of 8 lb test fire wire line, 25 feet or so of each 8 lb test and 4 lb test monofilament for leaders. An assortment of hooks, some floating lures like sponge rubber spiders and deer hair bugs, and some wet flies like streamers and nymphs. That, combined with a stick for a pole ought to get you some panfish.

That's a lot like asking what is the best car? It all depends on where you are and what kind of fishing you plan on doing.

Personally, I would go for a medium weight grahpite rod and a matching open face reel. Get an extre spool. One spool you load up with 6 lb test line, and the other 12.

Walk around the area you intend to fish and ask people what they're using. Start out with the same.

How about a basic survival fishing kit? You don't plan to go somewhere and survive, it happens, what would you include in this small general purpose kit?

In a film canister anyone can easily fit a few small bait hooks, some split shot, and a few flies. Wrap some 4 or 6 lb test line or leader around another piece of equipment like your walking stick. Then you can always catch fish in a tough spot.

Hi...

First, you must know how to use any gear that's in your emergency fishing kit. If you are already a fisher, you can easily put together such a kit from your existing gear.

For freshwater fishing in smaller streams or lakes, an assortment of hooks, monofiliment line, surface lures, spinners, and even a few dry flies for dappling, would be a good example.

Your local sporting goods store could also give you further advice regarding what lures will take what fish in a given area.

And don't forget the chewing gum...!! Chewed brown and pink gum makes excellent artificial worms...!!

NOTE:

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!
