Default basic rod

I am looking for a basic rod for my kid so we can go fishing together. He is under 10, are there any suitable ones out there?

There are perfect starter rods for children at any store that sells fishing rods. There is usually a pretty good selection for your child to choose from.

The first rod I gave my daughter was a 40 inch ice fishing rod that I rigged a small spinning reel onto. She was four and learned to cast and catch fish.

Under ten covers a lot of space and size. If your boy is nine, he's big enough to handle a six foot rod. I say get him a decent rig that will last him until he is old enough to buy his own gear. That's what my Dad did. I gave that rod to another kid when I was in my twenties. I still have the reel, a South Bend, and it still works perfectly. It's on my Crappie rod.

Get an ugly stik. Those things are just about as indestructible as can be. I've seen them run over, bent almost in half, and just used and abused like you could not believe, and still held up. Then get a decent reel, and you should be fine.

Just remember the Ugly Stick is high carbon content. Don't fish with it in a thunderstorm. It's a lightning rod.

There is a fishing rod called "Ugly Stick" ? I have never heard of such a thing, I thought you meant cut him a stick and let him use that.

I don't fish in Thunderstorms. So I guess I did not think about that. I've fished in rain, but I prefer to be under a roof during thunderstorms.

Naw-there really is a fishing pole called an "Ugly Stick":

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Casting Rods

They have all kinds of them for different uses. Just pick one that will fit the kid. I loved fishin' with my dad and remember them as some of the happiest memories of my childhood.
