Default Catch and Release?

Does anyone here catch and release fish? I have released fish that weren't of legal length but honestly, I don't see the purpose of the practice. I do like to fish, but I also like to eat those fish.

I don't see the point to catch and release. I don't catch and release deer or turkey. They are all sources of food to me.

Depends, I usually catch and release trout unless they are hooked deeply. I may keep a few to eat, but I'm not super-fond of trout anyhow. For other fish, I usually keep some and release smaller ones. I also mostly release the biggest ones to reproduce. I guess I sort of follow a slot-size pattern.

I'm with wvbreamfisherman- take what I need in the medium sized range, let the big ones quietly back to breed and the little ones grow up big.

People do things for different reasons.

Fishing for me is more than just food gathering, it's exercise- whether it's oaring or paddling or dragging a sled two miles across a frozen lake; it's a minute away from the small matters that take up so much of the days to put things into proper perspective- giving my slow moving brain a chance to think about what I'm doing and how I could do better/wiser, and it's a time to thank God and our darn lucky stars (and stripes) that we live where we live and have what we have because in the bigger picture of the greater world, not many folks get to count those kind of blessings.

In the same way, hunting is for sure food gathering, but it's also about a balanced life- teaching the youngsters (and us older-sters) about preparation for projects, to try and fail, brush ourselves off and try again, respect for property and equipment, the wildlife and places where we hunt; cooperation and teamwork, building exercise into a lifestyle, not to mention sharing time and game- no reason not to make some senior's day- who maybe used to hunt but can't any longer, or someone having financial difficulty- by dropping a nice roast or bag of fillets or whatever is in the pot that day- spend a minute w/ them and ask how they hunted or fished. Some of those old Codgers are a wealth of info you'll never get on an extreme blah-blah jackass tv show.

Good luck to you.

Good perspective guys. I don't get to fish that often so I don't catch and release. But if I did, I would probably let the ones go that were bigger and weren't damaged. However, I don't get to go that often so I usually put cook them or put them in the freezer.

I have to agree with perchbutt. She's got the right idea. I release large bass if I have all the fish I need for food, and anything too small to put a knife to.

A long time ago I released the biggest Smallmouth Bass I've ever seen. A buddy that was with me couldn't believe it and when he asked me why I said that if he had to ask he probably wouldn't understand the answer.

Likewise! I guess if its a 'game' lake or pond where its used for tournaments but aside from that I can't understand it.

Everyone has good arguments for either side. On one side, I can see releasing the larger fish to propogate and the smaller because they aren't legal. Then I can see the side which is "why do it if it's legal". I usually don't have a lot of time to fish or camp so when I do, I try to make the most of my time. I catch fish a lot to eat so filling the freezer up for the winter is a goal for me, along with other game animals which we eat.

I catch and release most of the time. Some might say it's cruel.

I like the sport of fishing, being on a river with mountain scenery all around me. Taking a break on a boulder and listening to the river and watching for wildlife.

When I'm backpacking I have never caught and ate a fish. I guess I'm just too lazy and don't want to get fish stank all over camp to attract bears.
