I'm with wvbreamfisherman- take what I need in the medium sized range, let the big ones quietly back to breed and the little ones grow up big.
People do things for different reasons.
Fishing for me is more than just food gathering, it's exercise- whether it's oaring or paddling or dragging a sled two miles across a frozen lake; it's a minute away from the small matters that take up so much of the days to put things into proper perspective- giving my slow moving brain a chance to think about what I'm doing and how I could do better/wiser, and it's a time to thank God and our darn lucky stars (and stripes) that we live where we live and have what we have because in the bigger picture of the greater world, not many folks get to count those kind of blessings.
In the same way, hunting is for sure food gathering, but it's also about a balanced life- teaching the youngsters (and us older-sters) about preparation for projects, to try and fail, brush ourselves off and try again, respect for property and equipment, the wildlife and places where we hunt; cooperation and teamwork, building exercise into a lifestyle, not to mention sharing time and game- no reason not to make some senior's day- who maybe used to hunt but can't any longer, or someone having financial difficulty- by dropping a nice roast or bag of fillets or whatever is in the pot that day- spend a minute w/ them and ask how they hunted or fished. Some of those old Codgers are a wealth of info you'll never get on an extreme blah-blah jackass tv show.
Good luck to you.
