Having the tools to make it helped, but I took an open topped 55 gal drum, cut it in half, top through bottom, then welded the two halves back together at the top making the 6 foot trough. punched tiny holes along the bottom (# 4 brad) for drainage The lined it with old carpeting, shredded a bunch of newspapers in 1 in strips, wet that down, then put in about 5 inches of compost/peat mix and covered with burlap bags. Put in the shade and spray the burlap every morning with water and the worms did just fine. In the fall, the dirt got mixed back in the garden and the next spring did the same with new compost/peat.
I had the worm shockers to get the critters out of the ground and each day we would replace the worms sold the day before. Kids put up a couple signs and they would sell 10-20 dozen a day. Kids made good money for college and they kept the garden watered so the worms would be close to the surface for harvesting.
