Default Are you able to fish often?

We live in Florida so still can fish a good bit of the time. Just wondered how often some of you, who live where you get a lot of snow, get to fish?

Pretty much every day as long as the ice is thick enough to walk on without making your hat float.

I like to fish between storms. We have many lakes that are deep and not too high in elevation that do not freeze. I like to wait for calm weather. The secret to fishing in winter is a boat with good canvas to get out of the wind. I carry a propane heater and a small stove to make soup and coffee. Summer is the worst time to fish for trout because the water warms up and the fish go deep. Spring, winter and fall they are much closer to the surface and have nice, firm textured meat. The boat ramps are pretty quiet. The only tough thing is ice. Ice on the boat ramp, ice on the boat. Sometimes we have to wait until mid-morning to go out, but the best fishing can be in mid-day unlike in the summer.

Gabbie,
There is a common theme to your threads about fishing and swimming in the winter. I am not sure what your motives are.

I wish I could get out more. But work and family lately has taken a lot of my time. I still try to get out as much as I can though.

Well, we don't get much snow, but we also don't get much rain. Most of the time around here it is impossible to fish without a boat...which we don't have.

I try to get out there as much as work and/or money will let me. Never did any ice fishin'...not sure my fingers would still work.

Bluesky,

I don't know where you live, but it is rarely a requirement to have a boat. Fishing from shore almost always works, but requires some different tactics. Like a different time of year, a larger rod with weight to cast further, or more bait fishing. Don't ever be daunted in the outdoors by a lack of equipment.

My father used to fish no matter what the time of year. We lived in NC, so it didn't freeze too much of the time. I am not going to fish unless it's comfortable, so I only go in the spring, summer or fall. I do not go when it's so hot even the fish hide out.

I mainly fish from spring through fall. The odd time I've gone ice fishing in the winter, but I prefer to relax with a couple of beverages in the warmer weather than to freeze.
