I'm moving from South Africa to Ontario, Canada in a couple of months, and I wanted to find out about some general safety tips that I should be aware of?

For example, here in SA we don't really have poisonous plants (like poison ivy), but you always need to check your boots for scorpions or spiders before you put them on, there's a high probability that you'll pick up ticks if you walk in dense bush (and tick-bite fever is no fun - I've had it a couple of times), Cobras, Mambas, and...

By now, many...if not most of you...have come to realize that there are at least half a dozen or more of 'survival', etc. types of TV shows which take place in Alaska...with some others taking place in Canada, and NW Washington. They just keep coming...!!

Do any of you have favorite 'survival'-type shows...and how believable do you find them to be...??

I'm really turned of by most of them...they're just too obviously scripted...or otherwise unreal...!!]]>

Bushcraft is a British term that has commonly been used for many years in Africa and Australia . It refers to the very broad skill set used to somewhat comfortably sustain oneself in the "Outback" of Australia, or the "bush" of Africa. This can sometimes entail a very significant re-engineering of the local environment such...

What household items do you use unmodified for outdoor activities.

Some examples would be a nice tupperware container as a dry box on the canoe.

Or a pill box to keep some spices or just a couple of lures for backcountry cooking/fishing.]]>
