Continuous hiking has really torn up my knees. At one point, they were so painful, I could barely bend them, the doctor told me I wore down nearly all of the cartilage behind the kneecaps. What are some of the best shock absorbent shoes or insoles for hiking and does anyone use trekking poles for this purpose?

See now my doctor always told me I needed anything Asics or New balance. They are supposed to be the best sneakers for hiking, biking, walking, running, etc. I love my New Balance, I have bought this brand for the last 10+ years.

I threw away the boots years ago in favor of New Balance walking shoes.

I've noticed most hikers lock their knees going down hill, which puts the shock into the knee. By keeping the knees unlocked upon impact, it's the muscles that take the shock and they heal much better than knees.

My wife uses New Balance walking shoes now for 6 years. Her top choice.

Wow Three pros in a row for hiking shoes rather than boots. However, I do not recommend shoes for everyone. Some of you will still need the ankle support given by lace up boots.

I'm surprised, too that everyone's in favor of shoes over boots because that's generally what I wore out the trail--boots. But I think I'll try the New Balance because I've heard really good things about them anyway. Especially if they're good at absorbing shock. And about locking knees going downhill...I'm pretty sure that's what I was doing wrong. I would recommend to any new hiker to be aware of how you're stepping because I really did tear up my knees pretty bad. They don't hurt anymore but they creak and the noise just makes me cringe.

I was pleasantly surprised with my Merrell shoes. Even though I am significantly overweight, The shoes absorb the shock of jumping over streams or off of rocks. I buy the lower cut ones and then wear Velcro ankle braces and it's oh so comfortable yet sturdy. I got them at DSW for half price!

Love my super feet. ALso used to love my Merrel boots until I got my last pair of Kaylands now I am a convert. Also look at trekking poles as suggested. Well get some of the weight off the knees if used correctly.

I remember years ago when I worked as a cook for a local restaurant they had mail in orders for the staff to have proper kitchen non-slip shoes. The place also had books so I picked up a pair and while they do not have the price tag of 5-10's they still work great.
