I originally wanted to throw this thread for socks but I now want to extend it to entire base layer apparel. I want to hear opinions from hard core users, pros and cons about these materials. If all goes well, maybe this thread can become sticky.

A variety of materials make suitable underwear. Anything except cotton really. I have worn wool Stanfield union suits in Alaska in July, but now mostly use synthetics like Patagonia capilene or equivalent. They can smell a lot after about 5 days, but aren't as itchy.

I still have 4 pair of Ulti-max hiker socks I bought in 2005. They have worked as well as merino wool both in hot and cold conditions. One pair of these also did a day of duty walking in water wearing crocs in February with ice on the edges of the stream. They warmed the feet right back up as well as wool.

I prefer the man-made stuff because I really do believe it's more durable. Plus the instructions to use it and care for it are generally more clear.

I'm a big fan of Smartwool and similar products for socks. It's soft and keeps your feet dry, and there's enough cushion to protect your feet from minor discomforts of protracted hiking.

For boxers, I'm all about the synthetic. It does a superior job of keeping the gents dry, and that's vastly superior than the alternative. I have no clue how I used to wear cotton boxers.

Many manufacturers state how their socks will keep you feet dry, but except Drymax none of them offer demonstration. Find it on YT and see for yourself.

I like wool but wool wears off much quicker than my Drymax, even Smartwool. Also I think that moisture control is better than with Smartwool. I would like to hear other opinions.

I prefer to use natural wool when I can. I understand the appeal of fleece, especially since it's easier to care for, but I'm a wool girl all the way.

Same here. One of the last things I really want to worry about is following washing instructions while I'm out camping to make sure that they won't shrink.

One thing I hate is the feel of synthetic fibers, which is why I usually wear wool underwear. Also, synthetics get stinkier much quicker from the sweat.
