Located in Toronto, KS and nestled between the timbers region and the grasslands region of the Flint Hills, is Fall River State Park. An amazing variety of plant and animal life await visitors to this park. 980 acres of grass prairie, forested floodplain, and blackjack savannah are awaiting outdoor enthusiasts to explore. Travelers seeking an area off the beaten path will find much to love about Fall River State Park and the many popular activities offered. Temperatures in the area varies greatly from season to season, with summer highs averaging in the 90′s and winter lows in the 10′s, so visitors with plans of camping should be prepared for the weather.

Camping, boating, hiking, water skiing, and picnicking are some the activities visitors to the park frequently enjoy. Extensive camping is available with 45 sites that feature electric and water hookups along with over 100 primitive campsites. Children can enjoy an available playground and swings. Six hiking trails wind through the unique Kansas landscape and offer a great perspective on the natural beauty of the area. Perhaps one of the most popular activities available is canoeing the Fall River which ends in the 2500 acre lake that shares the same name. Photographers and nature enthusiasts alike will find an enormous variety of flora and fauna to observe as well as a varied landscape conducive to a variety of wildlife. Visitors commonly report seeing dove, quail, deer, waterfowl, rabbit, squirrel, prairie chicken and wild turkey.

For those seeking more comfortable lodging, Fall River State Park has a limited number of cabins available. These aren’t typical, rustic, camping-style cabins either. Each cabin can sleep up to 6 and have full kitchens, bathrooms, an outdoor covered shelter, outdoor fire area and grill and a picnic area. These cabins are certainly for those who like to enjoy nature without sacrificing any of the creature comforts of home.

Excellent fishing is available at both Fall River and the reservoir. All varieties of fresh water fish can be found including: catfish, white bass, crappie, and walleye. Reports indicate that white bass fishing opportunities are particularly plentiful in the early spring, where these fish are known to be extremely active in the areas above the reservoir. The large reservoir is friendly to any size of motorboat. Canoeing and kayaking in the river are popular pursuits for visitors year round.

Visitors are sure to find an enjoyable experience at a park with this much to offer in the way of natural beauty, wildlife, and activities. More adventure minded travelers can find excitement by going whitewater paddling on the nearby Elk River. With so much to offer, Fall River State Park is a must see destination for any outdoor enthusiast.
