Brimley State Park, Upper Peninsula

Brimley State Park is located on Lake Superior in Brimley in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This state park is 160 acres with 237 large, grassy, sunny and shady sites at $23 a day for 50 amp sites, $21 for 30 amps and $16 for non-electric sites. There are modern clean restrooms and showers. A mini cabin is available to rent for $65 a night which includes electric, 4 bunk beds, microwave, fridge, counter with 4 stools, picnic table and grill. This state park participates in the Michigan State Park Explorer Program. A DNR field guide leads hikes throughout the park to discover insects, plants, animals & nature within the park designed to cater to children and families.

Brimley State Park has a boat launch to fish for whitefish, perch, northern pike, bass, walleye in Waiska Bay. The park offers one of the warmest swimming areas with a view of the Canadian hills across the bay from the park’s clean, sandy beach. There is a playground, fish cleaning station, horseshoe pits, and an enclosed picnic shelter that you can rent for $50 a day for a family reunion or other activity. Nearby, there is state land for hunting snowshoe hare, deer, black bear, and ruffed grouse. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are also favorite activities at Brimley State Park in the winter.

In February, the park and picnic shelter will be open for a winter fun day with fun winter games for all ages, a fire and food. June is the Lawnlympics. It is a single elimination horseshoe tournament. The top 3 teams go to state championships in North Higgins Lake State Park. July is Lawnlympics too, but this time it is the bean bag tournament. It is the same as the horseshoe tournament with the top 3 teams going to N. Higgins for the state championship. Fury Friends of Brimley is in August. Bring your pets for pet etiquette class and enter your beloved into the pet parade. Prizes will be awarded to the biggest, smallest and most unusual pet. September and October are fall festival months. Bring a canned food item to donate to the local food bank to enter the haunted house for free. There will be site decorating, a pancake breakfast, pumpkin carving, costume parade, trick or treating, and a chili cook-off!

There are many interesting places to visit near Brimley State Park. Bay Mills Indian Community, known as Place of the Pike, is a Chippewa Indian reservation. 2.4 miles west of Brimley is Bay Mills Resort & Casino. Travel further west to Newberry, MI. That scenic drive will take you to the famous and beautiful Tahquamenon Falls, which is an hour and a half away. A half hour east of the state park is Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The Soo Locks are located here allowing ships to travel from Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes by the St. Mary’s River which is 21 ft. in elevation. The Tower of History is 1200 ft. tall and will give you an amazing view of the Locks and beyond. The Museum Ship Valley Camp is a museum in a Great Lakes freighter with over 100 exhibits. Valley Camp has an Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit and it also has aquariums filled with great lakes fish. The International Bridge can take you to Canada from Sault Ste. Marie.
