Ohio’s Geneva State Park On The Banks Of Lake Erie

Not far from the Ohio and Pennsylvania state line on the banks of Lake Erie is the town of Geneva-On-The-Lake. A getaway place for many years, the park area has been updated for those wanting a more nature based outing. With almost 700 acres, there are miles of trails for hiking and routes for motorized vehicles. Since northeastern Ohio has some great snowy weather, the park’s trails have been adapted for snow mobiles and cross country skiing as well as hunting. Hunting is only permitted from mid-October to February, and an Ohio state permit is required. Rabbit, deer, and other game wander the park for gun or bow hunting or photography.

Fall is an especially pretty time with various colored maples, oak, and birch trees blazing their colors. There is easy access to the beach areas for sun bathing when the weather permits in summer months. There are lifeguards on duty during certain days and time frames. Picnicking areas are in sunny lawn spots or shade with pavillions. Contacting the park for usage on specific days can be done for reunions, parties, or other private uses. Electricity, water, and restrooms are near. Every season brings something new, and plant as well as animal wildlife is plentiful.

Fishing and boating are very popular activities on Lake Erie. People with boats may dock them seasonally or just for a short time for a fee at the Geneva State Park’s marina. The boat ramp is large enough to not cause overcrowding when launching, and parking for vehicles is plentiful. The marina has gasoline and other items that might be needed for a safe and enjoyable time on the Lake. Fishing supplies are sold there also. Whether one bank fishes on the Lake, or in one of the streams at the Geneva State Park, one will be pleased with the catfish, bass, pan fish, and steelhead trout that live here. Canoe rentals are available for streams and river areas. Charters are available if one wants to hire a boat and captain for an excursion to catch the tastiest fresh water perch and walleye. Other fun activities from the park is water skiing or jet skis.

There are cabin rentals or the new resort lodge, whichever suits one’s overnight needs. The lodge also has a restaurant and conference rooms. Geneva State Park is also near the Jennie Munger Museum where much history is stored in the beautiful, old residence from bygone times. There are also restaurants, bars with live music, and places to game. One of the iconic seasonal, open air restaurants on The Strip is Eddie’s Grill which is famous for its foot long hotdogs. People come from all over the world for these, and it’s a treat to eat and people watch there.

Northeastern Ohio is a top grape producer, and some of the most delicious wines come from this region. Old Firehouse Winery is right on The Strip and very popular for get-togethers. There are many other wineries throughout the countryside, and on the way, one may also drive through or stop to see the various covered bridges. Currently, the longest covered bridge in continental United States is in nearby Ashtabula.

Geneva State Park is located north on Route 534 off Interstate 90 so whether one is coming from Boston, Massachusetts, or Seattle, Washington, it’s easily accessible. The location is at 4499 Padanarum Road, Geneva, Ohio. The park office phone number is 440-466-8400 for general information. Reservations can be made by calling or visiting online at http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/tabid/736/default.aspx. Individuals as well as families will have a good time visiting this great park in Ashtabula County.
