Southern Georgia’s General Coffee State Park is a Hidden Treasure

Many of those who live in the southern part of Georgia already know about the many things General Coffee state park has to offer, but many others still have not discovered this hidden gem. That is a shame, since General Coffee state park is the perfect destination for families, and for kids of all ages.

Those who want to explore the history of the region can enjoy a living interpretation of the area’s rich agricultural heritage at the park’s Heritage Farm. Kids love exploring the rustic log cabins, the tobacco barn, the corn crib, the cane mill and other exhibits that allow them to learn what life on the farm was like in an earlier era. . And parents will love the fact that the kids are having so much fun they won’t even realize how much they are learning.

Nature lovers will find lots of things to love about General Coffee state park as well. The park is home to the aptly named Seventeen Mile River, which winds its way through a cypress swamp that is home to a number of rare plants and animals. Lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of the rare gopher tortoise or indigo snake.

Overnight accommodations at General Coffee state park run the gamut – from rustic campsites to more upscale digs. A number of inexpensive and convenient campsites are available for overnight visitors, along with several private cottages. Those seeking a more genteel experience can enjoy a romantic getaway at the Burnham House. This elegantly decorated cabin dates back to the 19th century, and it is the perfect choice for couples and others who want to get away from it all.

In addition to its regular activities, General Coffee state park plays host to a number of special events throughout the year. One of the most popular is the Pioneer Skills Day held every November. During this special even the Heritage Farm is brought to life by volunteers who get a chance to demonstrate their farm skills (or lack of same).

The Christmas season is another popular time at General Coffee, and each December sees storytelling, refreshments, hay rides and of course a visit from Santa Claus himself. Kids of all ages are sure to love the festivities.

Of course it doesn’t take a special event to bring General Coffee state park to life. Visitors can always enjoy a host of fun activities for the entire family, including hiking along a four mile long nature trail and fishing along the lake. Canoes are available for rental as well, providing visitors with a way to enjoy the park from a completely different perspective.

With all these things to see and do, General Coffee state park is unlikely to stay a secret for very long. In fact more and more visitors are discovering the natural beauty that can be found in this part of Georgia, and a visit to the park is a great way to enjoy a day, a weekend or even a more extended stay.
