The Davis Mountains State Park

Located deep in West Texas, The Davis Mountains State Park is the perfect rugged and romantic getaway. The Davis Mountains were named after the late Jefferson Davis, President of the confederacy. The Davis Mountains State Park is located four miles from the town of Fort Davis, which is rich in American Indian and United States history. The Davis Mountains State Park is made up 2,709 acres of rugged mountain terrain. The Davis Mountain State Park was opened to the public in the late 1930′s.

The Davis Mountains State Park is a beautiful blend of mountain scenery, grasslands, and woodlands. The area is rich in a variety of wildlife, which can be seen roaming naturally during a visit any time of the year. During the summer time, one can expect hot days with little humidity and cool nights, while the winters are filled with sometimes below freezing temperatures and an occasional snowfall.

There are a range of activities available at The Davis Mountains State Park, including camping, sightseeing, hiking, picnicking, backpacking, and bicycling. The area also provides the perfect setting for study by nature enthusiasts as well as star gazing. Attractions near The Davis Mountains State Park include The Big Bend Ranch State Park, The McDonald Observatory, historic sites, and the famous Marfa lights are a short drive from The Davis Mountains State Park.

The Davis Mountains National Park is open throughout the year. Entrance fees are $5.00 for ages 13 and up staying for the day and $4.00 for overnight stay.

There are a variety of campsites, which includes a fee in addition to the entrance fees. There is a maximum of eight people allowed per campsite. Types of campsites are listed below.

• Hike-In: These campsites require a minimum of four miles of hiking to be accessible. Pets are permitted in this area, however, campfires are not allowed. The altitude increases by 800 feet during this four mile hike. The fee for this campsite is $6.00 per four people.
• Campsites with water: While some campsites in this area must share the supply, water is available. These sites include a picnic table and a fire ring or grill. The fee for this campsite is $10.00 per night.
• Campsites with electric hookups and water: These sites have 20 to 30 amp services, picnic tables, and a fire ring or grill. The fee for this campsite is $15.00 per night.
• Campsites with electric hookups, water, cable and TV hook-ups, and sewer: These sites include all services, a picnic table, fire ring or grill, and 20 to 50 amp services. The fee for this campsite is $20.00 per night.

Lodging is also available for those who choose not to camp. The lodging is available at the Indian Lodge. With a distinguished Southwest, Pueblo style, The Indian Lodge was built in the 1930′s.
