Ainsworth State Park

Visitors to Ainsworth State Park in the awe-inspiring Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area enjoy camping, hiking and picnicking in a beautiful treed setting with several waterfalls nearby. Ainsworth State Park is located 35 easy freeway miles east of downtown Portland at Exit 35 off I-84.

Classic Camping at Ainsworth State Park
Ainsworth State Park offers full service RV sites as well as walk-in primitive tent sites. No reservations are accepted so arrive early for the best selection of sites. Walk a short distance from a common parking area for the tent-only primitive sites or simply drive and park at your full hookup campsite. The “B” loop is close to railroad tracks and can be noisy; the “A” loop is quieter and has pull-through sites. Site B31 is accessible for campers with disabilities.

Each site provides a picnic table and fire ring in a tree-filled setting. Flush toilets and showers plus a camp host and firewood make Ainsworth State Park enjoyable and easy to visit. An amphitheater near the day use area offers interpretive programs. This is a family friendly campground in a world class recreation area.

Near Ainsworth State Park are several additional state parks with day use facilities for fishing, windsurfing, swimming and biking. More services including food, gas and lodging are available in Cascade Locks, 10 miles to the east on I-84.

Hike to Nearby Waterfalls from Ainsworth State Park
An easy to moderate 6.2 mile hike on well maintained Gorge Trail #400 takes about three hours and follows the Columbia River Historic Highway. Start at the west end day use and program area of Ainsworth State Park or the east end near the walk in campsites. More ambitious hikers can take moderate difficulty side hikes off Trail #400 to Ponytail Falls or the Middle and Lower Oneota Falls. Families can enjoy an easy hike to Horsetail Falls as another side trail option.

Trail #400 leads to the spectacular 620-foot Multnomah Falls, the second highest year round waterfall in the United States. From the information center, climb an additional 1.2 miles on a paved trail to gain panoramic views of the falls and gorge. Other hiking options include two six mile hikes: one to the top of Larch Mountain, and another on the Wahkeena Loop trail. Visitors can also check out Multnomah Falls Lodge, built in 1925, which serves food and sells souvenirs.
