Goosenecks State Park in Southern Utah is a spectacular geological site that is definitely worth visiting on any trip through Utah. Located just 10 miles northwest of the town of Mexican Hat, the park overlooks the San Juan River as it carves through the desert on its way across the state. It is a unique site, and travelers through Utah should put Goosenecks State Park on their list of must-see attractions in the state.
The park overlooks the majestic San Juan River as it cuts and weaves through stone formations over 1000 feet below. The area has a fascinating geological history; experts believe it took over 300 million years for the river to form such a deep impression in the land. The primary overlook in the park is at an elevation of 5,000 feet.
The park itself is rather small, at only 10 acres. Visitors to the park can enjoy the breathtaking views of the San Juan River, have a picnic overlooking the ravine, and have gorgeous views of the stars at nighttime. Goosenecks State Park has no hiking trails, only undeveloped and untamed Utah wilderness. While there are no trails to the river below within the park, there is one trail just outside of the park that will take you down to the river. From here, you could put in a kayak and enjoy the views of the park from below as you paddle down the San Juan River.
The park does have a few campsites. Because there are such limited facilities available, camping is free and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are no bathrooms or showers, and there is no electricity or running water either. The park does have vault toilets available. However, campers should remember to bring their own water, as there is no electricity, bathrooms, or running water at the park.
The Goosenecks State Park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Visitors can come and go at anytime. Because the park is open at night, it is a popular destination for evening stargazing. Located in the wilderness and several miles from any town, there is no light pollution in the area, allowing the stars shine clearly. Goosenecks State Park at night provides visitors with an unrivaled experience in the Utah wilderness.
Other attractions near the park include the Glen Canyon National Recreation area and the small town of Mexican Hat. Additionally, the park is very close to the Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico borders.
