The McMillan Legacy G30 Reviewed
Overview
The McMillan Legacy G30 is part of a custom collection of six hunting rifles that ranges from a lightweight mountain rifle to a big-game Safari hunting rifle. All rifles in the collection are designated with the “G” in honor of the late founder of McMillan Firearms, Gene McMillan.
History
Gene McMillan was an Air Force mechanic whose garage-based hobby of building stocks for hunting buddies blossomed into a full-fledged business when Gene made his first commercial sale to the Marine Corp. Since that inauspicious beginning in 1975, the McMillan name has come to stand not only for excellence in stocks, but they have the distinction of manufacturing the benchrest rifle that first registered a perfect score. Now, the culmination of Gene McMillan’s work is embodied in the custom G30 collection.
The Legacy
The McMillan Legacy G30 is the mid-range rifle of the collection and features the classic Sporter stock combined with McMillan’s own EDGE graphite technology. This results in an ultra lightweight rifle that loses nothing in strength. The Legacy is available in four calibers from the 270 Winchester with a 24 inch barrel and a twist rate of 1 twist per 10 inches to the 300 Winchester Magnum with a 24 inch barrel and a twist rate of 1 twist per 12 inches.

Advantages
Twenty-five to thirty man-hours go into each Legacy hunting rifle. The result is a smooth, silken feel to the action. The barrel thread and chamber are both fitted by hand and the recoil lugs are surface ground and pinned to the receiver. Additionally, the action face and recoil lug are mated with a detention pin for complete alignment. McMillan has even gone as far as adding fluted bolt aids to sweep out mud and grit, keeping the action swift and reliable even under harsh environmental conditions.
Accessories are available and include a bipod, cleaning equipment and a scope among others.
Disadvantages
There is a tendency for soft-pointed bullets to hang in the action with single-feeding rounds on top of the magazine and some buyers may be confused by the redundant extraction system with both a plunger ejector and a blade extractor. Still, overall, there is little to criticism about the McMillan Legacy G30.
Summary
The McMillan Legacy G30 is an excellent choice for a hunting rifle even with the hefty price tag. It is a rifle made for firearm enthusiasts and they will definitely not be disappointed. It is rugged-tough yet elegant and accurate within 0.784 inches in a five shot group. The Legacy G30 is a fine tribute to both the standards and work ethics of the late Gene McMillan.
