If there was one book that any and all people that love the outdoors need to have on their bookshelf it would be Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport. Actually, they need to do more than just employ it for window dressing on a bookshelf. They need to read it and reread it time and time again. Simply put, this is one of the most valuable outdoors books you could own in your library. It covers all the basics required for keeping yourself safe in a difficult emergency situation.

Here is the fact of the matter - Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport might help keep you alive in a bad situation.

The subject of wilderness survival is not one that should ever be taken lightly. Some might assume nothing will happen to them when they venture into the proverbial great outdoors. And, quite honestly, for most people excursions outdoors generally do not entail any problems, mishaps, or missteps. Yet, the possibility does exist. We know this because news reports do mention situations where people are lost or stranded in the wilderness. Often, they are stranded in extremely dangerous weather conditions. If this were occur, the best thing a person could do is simply wait for a rescue team to discover them. However, this will require time. During that timeframe, they will need to keep safe which is a nice way of saying they will need to survive.

Gregory J. Davenport is no stranger or novice to the subject of wilderness survival. He is a certified USAF Survival School instructor that provided instruction on the subject to military combatants in the First Gulf War. He has now taken his expertise and broken it down into a well organized book that covers various different elements you need to know about surviving in a tough environment.

Despite being only 182 pages, Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport is extremely thorough in its presentation. The text is highly detailed, simple, and straightforward. The organization of the book is built around the five critical elements needed to survive in the wilderness for a prolonged period of time. Of course, prime material such as maintain warmth, finding shelter, and procuring food are all covered in depth. Aspects of maintaining the proper frame of mind are also touched one and this is a very helpful point. If you let stress or anxiety gain control of you, you will not be a help to yourself or others.

Navigating your way out of the wilderness is discussed. While it may not always be possible to find your way out, you can navigate yourself to an area that makes it easier for rescuers to find you. Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport touches upon these areas which further enhances the potential to survive. And is that not what you would want in a wilderness emergency?

This work is effectively illustrated with drawings and charts to make your understanding of the material better enhanced. The book has also been designed so that you can effectively use it as a reference guide when you need to brush up on a particular subject.

All in all, this is a fantastic book that covers its subject matter in a brilliant manner. Those seriously interested in the subject of wilderness survival (and that should be anyone that ventures into the wilderness!) need to buy a copy of Wilderness Survival by Gregory J. Davenport. It truly is a must have for any outdoorsmen’s library.
