  1. Boots vs Shoes

My answer will not be popular here. I prefer to hike in my barefoot accepted ballet flats. I have had several pairs of “supportive“ hiking shoes and boots. I developed major hip pain and got to the point I was in constant pain when I went out. I found out I have 4 bulging discs in my lower...

  3. Doubling up on SLEEPING BAGS

We use a 20° F double sleeping bag always lined with cotton sheets. I sewed Velcro in the bag and on the sheets to keep them from getting bunch up. If it is colder we add one or two wool army blankets. We have always been plenty toasty warm. Don’t forget the wool socks and a hat.
  4. I like the idea of a quick camp lunch!

I love recipes by Sarah Kirkconnell https://trailcooking.com/recipe-home/. Her recipes taste great, and can be made low sodium. Here is one. American Pho In a sandwich bag: 3 ounce block ramen (toss seasoning packet) or chuka soba noodles 2 Tbsp crumbled dried mushrooms 2 Tbsp freeze-dried...
  5. I use to sleep on the ground

I’d like to add I tent camped for 30 years. I am not inexperienced. We tent camped in Yellowstone in the snow and were quite comfortable. That last year was not the usual. Another factor for the B was we were not camping. It seemed to be rainy every weekend. We are minimalist campers, even...
  6. I use to sleep on the ground

Ppine, We have a good tent with rain fly and ground cloth, Thermarest mattresses and great sleeping bags. We have a waterproof awning. We had planned on a few days at our favorite spot outside Estes Park. We don’t have campfires when we’re west. Storms popped up before we had a chance to put the...

  8. I use to sleep on the ground

I miss sleeping on my Thermarest mattress and I miss the tent. I will often use the mattress on the floor watching TV. My husband finally talked me into buying a small Class B after a two week trip west was ruined by unseasonably cold, rainy and misquote tent trip. We could sleep in the minivan...

  14. What is the best size yeti cooler for camping

We did a lot of research before we purchased an expensive cooler and we decided on a 35qt Engle. We love the cooler, and yes it is worth the money. But it is large and hard to pack around so we also purchased 2 -25qt Engle coolers. We will use all of the coolers at different times. I really...
  15. What do you guys think is the best style of campfires?

If I want it to last awhile I usually build an upside down fire. Larger pieces of wood on the bottom and smallest on top. For a small quick fire I build a teepee. For a fire starter I soak wine corks in rubbing alcohol. I have also soaked small pieces if pine from a project. The pine works but...
  16. ...Just checked out a low-heat dehydrated food website...

I purchase freeze dried food from https://www.packitgourmet.com/ and put together my own recipes. We eat very little salt. Most of the food is decent and we can season it to our own tastes. We haven’t tried the pre-prepared food. I started with recipes from http://blog.trailcooking.com/ but it...

  20. How do you pack your tent?

I have tried rolling clothes for packing. The life of me I can’t figure out how to roll them without lots of wrinkles. I smooth and roll carefully and when I unpack my clothes, they look like I just wadded them up in a ball. So I fold and put them in packing cubes carefully.
