I get more out of the experience

Same here. Another thing that works well is to bring a child. When my nephew comes along, he spots things I never would have noticed.

    Is bigger better??

I much prefer campgrounds where the RVs stay in their own section and the tent campers stay in their own section. RVs are nice, though, for their purpose. When my aunt and uncle retired, they spent 6 months working their way from Kansas to Alaska and back.

    Lewis & Clark Wannabe

Have you been to the Black Hills of South Dakota? The views there are breathtaking, and there is wildlife galore. The only hitch is that you do hit nodes of civilization once in a while, but it's the sort you don't mind - a fence line or an abandoned trailer - just enough to remind you that...

    Spider Bites

Is there any specific first aid required for basic spider bites? I know that poisonous spider bites need treatment right away, but do normal every day crawl-into-your-shoe-and-bite-your-toe spider bites need special care?

    "Toughening Up"

Good for you, setting goals and working toward them. My only advice would be to take it slow and not get discouraged. Don't try to add a mile a day, or give up at the first blister. Work into it, take a friend, treat yourself to small rewards at mini-milestones.

    Delicate Question...

All well and good "in the woods". Not so good on rocks. I bring along biodegradable TP, and try to find at least some sort of shrubbery or a recess - definitely not on the main trail, or where someone may be reaching for a handhold. I'll have to look into those WAG bags.

    Wet feet

My mom used to make me wear plastic sandwich bags over my socks inside my boots whenever we went walking in the woods. She said if we walked in wet socks/shoes we would catch pneumonia. Isn't sweaty feet (from being trapped inside plastic) just as bad?

    Most Sentimental Campfire Memory

My youngest brother loved camping and always carried a hiking stick. He loved to whittle it - not to carve shapes into it, he would just whittle chips off of it until it was too short to use. When he died, we took his last hiking stick along with us to one of his favorite campsites then took...

    Bacon

Super idea! I've saved my bacon grease to use to grease pans when cooking eggs, pancakes, etc, but never thought of using it as firestarter. Now I'm itching to get out there and try it!

    pre cook

When you pre cook and dehydrate, do you still have to keep it cold? I know that jerky will keep, but it is preserved with salts and seasoning.

    Beaver fever

Does it affect the fish in the local waters too? Not that I plan on making my own sushi on the campsite, but it's good to know what's out there, and how it can be spread. Also, if you do start getting symptoms, what should you do?

    Camp rules

The two big ones for us: 1. EVERYONE helps. You don't help cook, you don't eat. You don't help set up the tent, you don't sleep in a tent. You don't help clean up, you clean up alone next time. 2. TELL SOMEONE where you're going. If you don't come back, we'd like to know where to start...

    shed antlers

This is interesting! I never knew this. I always thought I just didn't know where to look for them. I wonder what minerals they get from them?

    Snow Biking

I don't recommend it. I was missing my old bike, and thought I'd pull it out. Big mistake. All I can say is, good thing for bike helmets.

    Dual Survival on TV

Definitely unedited DVDs, or else longer versions that include more details for those of us who would like to learn from them. Maybe they could make the 1-hour show for "entertainment", then a 3-4 hour show for "education". I bet they could make a mint, while passing on some great info!

    Canoe trip for kids

If this is a first-time thing, I might recommend a one-week trip. My sister's church takes a group of teens to the Adirondacks every year, and that is plenty long enough for them.

    Ynp

We went to Yellowstone in 1995, just after the wolves were reintroduced, and were lucky enough to see one. The officials there tried to convince us it was a coyote, but this was definitely bigger than coyote sized. In 1995 you could still see evidence of the fires of '88, but even more...

    Polly Wolly Doodle

My favorite silly song was back in scouts when we did "Singing in the Rain". All you sing is the chorus, and each time you add another physical movement. It's great fun and gets everyone laughing and forgetting about being soaked by the rain. Here's a link: Singing in the Rain - Scout Song...

    Bass Pro

I will be heading to the midwest in the spring, and have heard that the headquarters of Bass Pro is in Missouri. Has anyone been there? Is it worth a visit?

    15 Species Challenge 2011

Get a camera that will date-stamp your pictures. Keep a journal with the date, time, location, conditions, bait, notes, etc., along with a picture of your catch. By the end of the year you will have yourself a nice book!
