    Unqualified individuals on trips

The practice hike sounds like a great idea. A "fluffy" 50 year old woman can make a 50 miler if she is in decent condition and carrying a light pack so don't automatically discount them. If you do the practice hike then people will know what they're in for and can decide to go or not.

    Vermont winter hike today

I just got back from a short hike near the White River in Vermont. It was freezing cold but clear and sunny. The highlight of the day came in the form of a Bald Eagle fishing in the river. I've seen them high in the sky before but never actually fishing. It was quite a sight. I feel very...

    populated areas and police

Back in the 70s I was escorted out of a county in Utah. I had been backpacking in the High Uintahs and I came down for supplies and the police literally drove me and my buddies out of town for vagrancy. I'm sure things may have changed since then but it did happen to me.

    Best Ginger Tea Recipes

I just take regular tea and throw some crystallized ginger candy into it. When the tea is gone I eat the ginger from the bottom of the cup. Delicious.

Do You Tell Scary Stories Around The Campfire

I used to tell my kids the story of Peter Marlow who took in a wounded vagrant who was missing an ear after the civil war. While he was out in the fields working he heard gunshots and screams coming from his house. He went back and found his wife and son killed and the vagrant missing. He hunted...

    Going on insulin

My doctor is starting me on insulin and I'm wondering how this is going to affect my hiking. I like to hike alone but now I'm not sure if that will be such a good idea. Any other diabetic hikers out there can share advice or experiences? Did you have to change the way you hike because of your...

    Getting worms

The convenience stores around here don't carry them in the winter but you can get them in sportsman's shops year round. My sister-in-law is from NYC and she thought it was so strange that all the convenience stores around here sold deli tubs full of night crawlers. She thought they sold them for...

When was the last time you slept in a canvass tent?

I think the last time I was in one was in a platform tent at a campground that my church group rented for a retreat. This was maybe 5 years ago. For regular camping, I can't even remember the last time.

    Where to get swimming lessons?

Almost every YMCA with a pool offers swimming lessons for children and adults. The child can stay in the same class for as long as they need to so they can really get the basic skills down.

    Scuba diving for Maine Lobster?

I know that it is illegal for a scuba diver to catch lobsters in Maine, but I'm wondering if there is anywhere that it is legal for a scuba diver to catch lobsters for personal use. Is there some sort of fishing permit you can get?

    Am I just a slob?

If my bedding feels too gritty to sleep in then I'll shake it out but bringing a broom camping never occurred to me either. Then again, I'm not a good person to ask since I'll go the whole week camping without being bothered by the fact that I haven't had a shower.

    Frying over the campfire

Since deep frying stinks up the house it makes sense to save it for when you're camping. I'd consider it for sure but I've never done it in the past.

    Time for warm socks!

I wear wool year round too of course. In the winter I do wear a heavier sock though. What brand they are I don't know. I've had them for an awfully long time.

    Animals chewing you while sleeping?

I recently read an article about a terrible incident in a hospital in India where rats chewed on one of the patients. I don't know if it's different in the wild, but I don't think you want this happening to you gentlemen: Patient dies after rats chew off penis in ward - Latest - New Straits Times

    What's in YOUR ice shanty?

So it's finally time to pull out the shanty for ice fishing season. I have seating, a wood stove and lots and lots of coffee! Should be able to drive it out next week. Can't wait! Anyway, What do you fellow icefishermen have in your shanty? Is it just four walls around a hole or do you go...

    Cast Iron Pot for Stew

Zelda, Walmart does carry them. They carry Stansport and Lodge. If your local store does not have them, you can order them online and they'll ship it to your store so you won't have to pay any shipping charge.

    Necessity of a Sleeping Pad?

The older I get the more necessary a sleeping pad gets. I actually have a sleeping pad built into my sleeping bag and I still need another one under me. The should rename the story "The Geezer and the Pea"

    Gray squirrel infestation

I paid $3,000 to get rid of my infestation. The majority of the money was spent on squirrel proofing. When your house is over 200 years old there are a LOT of spaces that they can get in.

    Wild Squirrel

I hate squirrels. I paid over $3,000 to get rid of them from our attic. They are persistent and they chew everything. I'd rather have rats than squirrels.

    Swimming in quarries?

I loved swimming in the quarries when I was a kid. The water was cold and there were so many cliffs to jump from. I'm pretty sure that they must have been spring-fed because the water was like ice even in August.
